Who are we?
Back in 2010, a group of U-M students got together with a single goal: to tell the highest-quality stories through video on the Michigan campus. Their majors were diverse, ranging from business to pharmacy to, of course, Film, Television, and Media (FTVM). While their specific skill sets varied, they were collectively passionate about the moving image, and discovered that by working together they could make better films than each could alone. They called their collaboration “Filmic.”
Soon after its founding, Filmic was presented with the opportunity to start telling stories about the University of Michigan, working with administrators across the University – in Student Life, Development, Athletics, and Admissions to name just a few – to chronicle the student experience through film. And thus, Filmic became U-M’s first student-led creative production company. Over the years, Filmic has solidified its reputation as one of the preeminent makers of creative video content in Ann Arbor, having produced dozens of classic films about the maize and blue — and beyond. Each year, the organization recruits new diverse, ambitious filmmakers, all equally passionate about their school and about maintaining the highest standards of production quality.
Filmic’s core credo – “Cinema Everywhere” – stems from a collective belief that any story can be made cinematic and impactful, and its members bring that energy to every project they take on.
FILMIC’S ROLE TEAMS:
Art Director
These are the visionaries - the type of people who see a barn jacket at Goodwill and style it so it looks straight off the NYFW runway. They imagine and execute the visuals of a project.
Art Direction tasks include storyboarding, scripting, set design, costuming, and more.
DP
Not only are our DPs absolute pros at walking backwards with a heavy rig, they maneuver the camera to make us see the world in ways we never have seen it before.
DP tasks include shot-listing, operating the camera & equipment on set, and working with our editors to string our story together.
Editor
Often associated with dark basements, dual monitors, and blue light glasses, our editors take what isn’t possible in real life and make it possible onscreen.
Editor tasks include taking notes on set, putting together a timeline, adding in sound and color, and turning raw footage into a beautiful final product.
Producer
The sticky-noting, color-coding, inbox-organizing folks who manage client relationships. Their inbox is always open and it is their job to keep you informed.
Producer tasks include acquiring and communicating with new clients, setting up budgets, creating production schedules, booking locations and talent, and everything that keeps the project running smoothly.
Sound Engineer
The brains behind the beats of a project. Our sound team designs everything from the pop of bubblegum to the melody accompanying a voiceover.
Sound Engineer tasks include composing original soundtracks, getting sound on set, and helping create and implement diegetic and non-diegetic sound into our videos.
Writer
A collection of scribblers, poets, essayists, comics, and playwrights. The writers room is where ideas are sculpted into a script and impulsive pizza orders are delivered.
Writer Tasks include running the writer’s room, coming up with pitches and scripts for our videos, and implementing the overarching vision and script throughout the production process.
